✯ ABOUT ✯
During the 2025 Venice Carnival, I travelled to the floating city to meet, interview, and document the city’s artisans: from mask-makers experiencing their busiest season of the year to the last generations of lacemakers trying to pass on their craft.
Through audio and film, this project aimed to capture craftsmanship as an important strand of Venetian heritage, one that is often eclipsed amid global arts & culture fairs and the crippling effects of mass tourism. Moreover, I sought and met the locals determined to preserve and revive Venice’s social and cultural life at a local scale.
Venice’s crafts have a particular richness and beauty, the kind born from a long legacy of design, expertise, and standards of true excellence. Its workshops and warehouses offer a window into a lesser-explored side of Venetian heritage and contemporary creative enterprise.
I worked with creative entrepreneurs, craftspeople, artisanal Venetian brands, museums, hospitality partners and cultural organisations to curate and profile these spaces & people, and promote an alternative way to experience the city - one that supports its social fabric, heritage preservation and cultural regeneration.
Special thanks to project partners: Ilaria Marcatelli, Maker Mile, Martina Vidal Atelier, Tessiture Luigi Bevilacqua, Michela Canzi-Blanc, The Place of Wonders Foundation, The Hospitality Experience, Ercole Moretti, the Lace Museum of Burano and Fondazione Andriana Marcello.
✯ RESEARCH ✯
After weeks of remote research zooming in on obscure Google maps pins, endless WhatsApp threads, and browsing local newspapers, magazines and collectives, I continued my research on the ground. I visited some of Venice’s network of artisans in their workshops and interviewed incredible creatives building infrastructures to support them, documenting it all on Instagram.
