THE JOURNEY
A little bit more about the journey we’ll go on and what we’ll explore in each workshop.
-
In our first workshop, we’ll explore creativity as it relates to society today, and understand the roots of the pre-existing narratives around the role of art and life of the artist that we may hold.
We’ll consider capitalism, the attention economy, the ‘tortured artist’ and ‘starving artist’ archetypes, and how they relate to, distort and hinder a personal sense of creativity and sense of freedom when crafting a creative life. I hope you will leave the first session with an understanding of some of the many reasons art is countercultural, challenging for both the artist and the audience, and ready to embrace that challenge, for it is worthwhile.
-
Our second workshop will begin to trace our personal sense of creativity back to the very root — we’ll employ a series of exercises and prompts to reconnect with and map our creative instincts, playful inner child, and point of interest or curiosity we might light to explore.
To build confidence around trusting our instincts, we’ll reframe creativity as something engrained and instinctual rather than a talent that is god-given or skill which one must be formally taught, looking towards ancient examples of this inbuilt creativity throughout human history until the present day as case studies.
-
Now that you have an idea of where your creativity is rooted and coming from, our third workshop will guide you through exploring these various possible directions before settling on a singular intention for the remainder of the course. We’ll investigate how artists and creatives we admire approach the creative process and projects with similarities for ours, and use healthy comparison as a means of finding direction.
We’ll also use this workshop to reframe the creative process so it can be as freeing and nurturing as it needs to be for our best ideas to come to fruition. We’ll explore the concepts like the beginner’s mind and Plato’s Forms, and begin to relate to our ideas as an external force which we can work with and seek to serve, to de-centre ourselves from the process and begin to lay the foundation for our best work to come through.
-
As we undertake our creative project of choice, we are bound to run into blocks, limiting beliefs, obstacles external and internal that disrupt our journey and obstruct the path ahead. Our fourth workshop will serve as a masterclass in gently investigating and moving through them, using a therapeutically-informed technique I developed myself and use often.
You will learn this method in detail and practice confronting your blocks in a way that not only identifies the root cause and cultivates self-compassion, but also allows you to effectively assume authority and gain the clarity you need to break longstanding patterns and take action towards your goals.
-
Our fifth workshop will tackle the external blocks that stand in the way of your creative life. Be prepared to pull some weeds from your garden. This is where crafting a creative life gets really practical.
You will audit your routines, habits, lifestyles and relationships in search of places where we can carve out more time, physical room, and headspace for creativity, and we will work together to consider solutions for negotiating, bypassing or shifting some of these dynamics and start building practical structures, structures, habits and behaviours that better support your creativity.
-
In our final workshop, we distill and fit together all you have learnt in the past 5 workshops together, and begin to learn how to structure a creative practice that takes all of these pieces into account: mindset work, creative time & space, cultivating inspiration, experimentation, and commitment to the practice.
We will personalise a structure I have designed that allows the efficient use of all of these tools, whether you have 10 minutes or several hours to dedicate to your practice. You will have a chance to implement this new approach to your practice ahead of our final check in in January.
-
In a final check in, you will have an opportunity to reflect on the past several weeks and receive clarity on anything needing further explanation or support.
We will meet for the last time in the new year, so you have time to implement, test and experiment with the tools you’ve learnt in your own practice, and provide accountability and a smooth transition out of the course and into your creative life.

FAQS
-
The full duration of the course is 10 weeks. However you might have noticed there are only 6 proper workshops — that’s because some of this work warrants a bit more time for you to think about what we’ve discussed, begin implementing it, test out what’s working, and notice what’s not before we move onto the next theme. Therefore, some of the workshops are 2 weeks apart to give you more time to simmer and experiment between sessions.
We will have a community forum running for the full 10 weeks for support, accountability, questions and guidance from myself and your peers, so we can keep in touch between workshops too.
In case you missed it, the course dates are 7 October–13 December, with live workshops running at 6pm GMT on Thursday 10 October, Thursday 17 October, Wednesday 30 October, Thursday 14 November, Thursday 28 November, and Thursday 12 December.
-
Though I will do some talking to explain the concepts and ideas around each theme, the course is comprised of true workshops! Not lectures. Expect to share your ideas and experiences, do activities, ask me questions, and hear from your peers throughout each session.
-
I can confidently say that these 6 steps are the main keystones that helped me change my life from working corporate, feeling trapped on the conveyor belt of life, and being disconnected to my creativity to now, living and working as a full time creative only two short years later.
I also had the privilege to guide 10 mentees through these workshops this past summer, and their results were incredible. One participant managed to receive an influx of job opportunities after these workshops helped her get over a fear of sharing her creative work; another broke through a 3-year long writers’ block. Others were able to meet their goals too, like getting their writing published, making a plan to pivot careers, successfully committing to their creative practice for multiple months, and running workshops of their own.
All of this reinforced that this work really, really works.
-
YES! A thousand times yes. My mentorship will help you discover your own ways of engaging with creativity - whether it’s your first time or your hundredth. You can begin developing your practice with the group in real time, or you are free to simply listen and come back to the recordings of each workshop when you are ready. You have lifetime access to this material!
-
Also yes! So often we are wed to a way of thinking or doing that we have picked up somewhere and never questioned. This course will help you to audit how you think, relate, and practice your creativity. This kind of attention and enquiry almost always lead to an up-level in our process, because creativity isn’t fixed or static, it grows and changes frequently. It will only support you further to take the time to see what your current practice needs here and now.
-
I am a big believer that when we understand our unique creative lens, question longstanding beliefs around creativity, and begin to forge a path that is totally right for us, we stand out. When we obsess over trying to give the creative industries what we think is wanted or desirable — ie. When we keep up with the joneses in our creative lives — we tend to blend in.
This course will help you to get in touch with your unique selling point as a creative and build the self-assurance and trust to take this to the marketplace, should you wish to. I am sure you will find the perfect match for whatever it is you deeply wish to offer there — I myself spent many years worrying my instincts were leading me somewhere ‘too niche’, but today, this specific path is the precise reason I have been offered jobs, connected with clients, and built the creative career I am lucky to have today.
-
The course costs £300 in total. You can pay this either up front at once, or in 3 monthly instalments of £100.
Alongside the work that goes into preparing, facilitating and communicating with mentees before and during the course, the course fee acts as an exchange for accountability. We are far more likely to show up for something we have paid for than something that is free.
I have endeavoured to make the course affordable and monthly payments manageable, but I understand this may not be accessible to all creatives everywhere. If affordability is a serious concern and you strongly wish to take the course, please let me know.

ABOUT YOUR GUIDE
Issabella Orlando is a filmmaker, writer, poet and full-time creative based in London. After spending several years navigating her entry into the creative industries, she discovered she had lost touch with her personal sense of creativity and the fulfilment that came with it. Thus, she went on a journey to rekindle, renegotiate and reframe creativity in a way that permitted the creative life she had always desired.
Having spent years studying the creative process and continuing to do so while developing her own practice, she is both peer and guide in delivering this creative mentorship course, which she designed based on the tools, challenges and things she needed most when crafting her own creative life.
